It’s one of the questions we hear most in our San Marcos showroom: “We have kids and a dog. Should we get luxury vinyl plank or hardwood?” Both can be great choices. The right answer depends on your household, your rooms and what you want from your floors over the long run. Here’s an honest side-by-side.
The short version
- Choose luxury vinyl plank (LVP) if your top priorities are water resistance, easy care and standing up to everyday chaos from kids and pets.
- Choose hardwood if you want the look and feel of real wood, the option to refinish in the future, and you’re comfortable with a little more care.
- Many families use both: LVP in the kitchen, entry and laundry room, and hardwood in living and dining areas.
Durability and scratches
LVP has a protective wear layer on top of a printed design layer. A good wear layer stands up well to toys, chair legs and pet nails, and it doesn’t show everyday wear as quickly as many wood finishes. Wear layers vary by product, so compare specs when you shop.
Hardwood is durable, but it’s still wood. Pet nails, dropped toys and grit can leave scratches and dents, especially on softer species and glossy finishes. The upside is that many hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished later to erase years of wear. With engineered hardwood, how often you can refinish depends on the thickness of the wear layer. Many families find that a lower-sheen finish and a lighter, more varied wood tone hide everyday marks better.
Water, spills and accidents
This is where LVP really stands out. Many LVP products are waterproof or highly water-resistant, which helps with spilled drinks, wet paws and the occasional pet accident. That’s why it’s so popular in kitchens, baths and laundry rooms. Even so, wipe up spills promptly so water doesn’t sit at the edges.
Hardwood and water don’t mix well. Spills need to be wiped up quickly, and standing water or repeated pet accidents can damage the wood. It’s also important to know that water damage and pet damage aren’t covered by installation warranties, including ours.
Comfort and noise
Both are hard surfaces. LVP often feels a little softer and warmer than tile, and many products have an attached underlayment that helps with sound. Hardwood has a solid, natural feel underfoot. With either one, area rugs in play areas and bedrooms add comfort and cut down on noise.
Look and feel
Today’s LVP has convincing wood grain and texture, in everything from light coastal oaks to rich, darker tones. Hardwood, though, has depth and natural variation that many people love. No two boards are exactly alike, and it ages with character. If authenticity matters most to you, hardwood is hard to beat. If you want a wood look without worrying about spills, LVP is a great fit.
Everyday care
LVP: Sweep or vacuum (no beater bar) and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for vinyl. Skip wax and “mop and shine” products. Use non-staining furniture pads.
Hardwood: Sweep or vacuum often to remove grit, and clean with the hardwood cleaner your manufacturer recommends. Never wet-mop or steam-clean. Keep indoor humidity steady and use window coverings to limit sun fading.

Budget and long-term value
Prices vary widely for both, depending on the product, the rooms and the prep your subfloor needs, so the best way to compare is with a real estimate for your home. In general, think about value over time. LVP gives you low maintenance and peace of mind in busy, wet areas. Quality hardwood can be refinished and may last for decades with care. Our Synchrony financing can help if you’d like to spread out the cost.
What we recommend for busy households
For many San Marcos families we work with, the winning combination looks like this:
- Waterproof LVP in the kitchen, entry, mudroom or laundry room, and any room where the dog spends most of its day.
- Hardwood or LVP in living and dining areas, depending on how much you value real wood versus easy care.
- Carpet in bedrooms for comfort and quiet.
